Welcome to the electronic agenda and billboard regarding
the upcoming 60th Anniversary celebrations and activities in Belgium and Luxembourg !

AMBA is pleased to share all planned events and projected manifestations with you, as they are known at this point.
The agenda is compiled from information received by museums, cities and communities, local and regional tourists boards, historic - and collectors associations as well as groups and individuals who are all active in the local commemorative communities.
It is updated on a regular basis and points of contact (PoCs) for various events -- as they are known --, can be found at the bottom of the page.
The AMBA 60th anniversary agenda is meant to keep you informed of "what's going on" and assist you in planning your individual trips/visits to Belgium and Luxembourg in 2004 and 2005.

2004 “Battle of the Bulge” Commemoration

AMBA resolution

Be it resolved a period of commemoration be selected during the September 2004 – February 2005 time period to reflect on the liberation of Belgium and Luxembourg by U.S. forces and especially on the “Battle of the Bulge” in the Ardennes in 1944/45 to jointly remember and honour the victims and to welcome and pay tribute to returning American veterans, the undersigned organisation projects the following:

Whereas the September 44 liberation by U.S. forces and the ensuing December 44 - February 45 “Battle of the Bulge” in the Belgian and Luxembourg Ardennes were two key historical events that will forever be remembered in both countries,

Whereas the “Battle of the Bulge” fought in the Belgian and Luxembourg Ardennes by thousands of American GIs resulted, after an initial shock, in a decisive American and allied victory over the enemy,

Whereas the “Battle of the Bulge” has jointly and prominently been remembered in Belgium, Luxembourg and the U.S. on the occasion of its 40^th and especially 50^th anniversaries,

Whereas the three countries are aware of the importance to nurture and promote the collective memory of bravery and sacrifice in the Ardennes as a powerful message for future generations, also in the spirit of reconciliation among nations,

Whereas the 60^th anniversary of the “Battle of the Bulge” will be probably the last occasion to give a warm “Thank You” to American veterans,

Whereas the Belgian and Luxembourg museums of the “Battle of the Bulge”, together with key historical- and research associations and “welcoming veterans” organizations in both countries, have recently joined efforts by founding a bi-national organization, AMBA (Belgian-Luxembourg Association of the Museums of the Battle of the Ardennes),

Whereas one of AMBA´s objectives in the context of preserving the collective memory, is to assist with the planning and coordination of programs, ceremonies and special educational programs and support within its capabilities other organization and initiatives in Belgium and Luxembourg during the 60^th anniversary cycle in 2004 and 2005,

Whereas AMBA will offer its support to national, regional and local official authorities and appropriate organizations in both Belgium and Luxembourg to help with their own planning process for 60^th anniversary-related commemorative activities,

Whereas AMBA, together with all its standing members and associates, projects to host and organize on its own several joint commemorative events that will simultaneously take place in Belgium and Luxembourg during the September 2004 – February 2005 time frame,

Whereas AMBA is aware that numerous American veterans of the “Battle of the Bulge” and their families will observe the 60^th anniversary and plan to re-visit Belgium and Luxembourg on that occasion,

Whereas AMBA and all its members and associated organizations are prepared to jointly or individually assist - within their capabilities – American veterans during their visit in Belgium and Luxembourg,

Therefore,

AMBA hereby declares to lend its support and assistance to the official U.S. authorities and American associations and organizations that will or may be involved in the planning-, coordination-, and implementation process of 60^th anniversary-related commemorative activities in the U.S., in Belgium and in Luxembourg. For that reason, AMBA is prepared to respond - within its capabilities – to requests for support in regard to facilitating contact, cooperation and especially coordination for initiatives that may develop within the transatlantic commemorative community in the context of the 60^th anniversary of the “Battle of the Bulge”.

9/10 septembre 2004: 60e anniversaire de la libération du Luxembourg par les forces alliées
16 décembre 2004: 60e anniversaire du début de la " Bataille des Ardennes "
27 février 2005: "Journée nationale de la Résistance", 60e anniversaire de la libération des camps de concentration
8 mai 2005: 60e anniversaire de la victoire des forces alliées en Europe et commémoration des anciens combattants et des maquisards luxembourgeois
3 juillet 2005: Commémoration de la Shoah de la communauté juive luxembourgeoise
12 novembre 2005: Journée de commémoration de l’enrôlement de force et du retour des prisonniers de guerre luxembourgeois

Prévue sur une superficie de 1.200 M2, cette exposition consacrée à la Bataille de Bastogne, présentera un outil pédagogique à part entière. Différents thèmes y seront évoqués : situation de la bataille des Ardennes dans le cadre du conflit mondial; illustration des thèmes phares à travers Bastogne avant décembre 1944, la bataille proprement dite, avec reconstitution d'un QG allié et d'un QG allemand, la vie des soldats, les civils dans la bataille....
Des témoignages et commentaires d'acteurs du conflit seront présents tout au long du parcours.

From December, 18 until November 2005 Exhibition « I was 20 in 45 in Bastogne »

Covering an area of up to 1,200 square meters, this exhibition dedicated to the Battle of the Bulge will be a fully-fledged educational exercise. It will include different themes:
The Battle of the Bulge in the context of World War II ; an illustration of key events in and around Bastogne before December 1944 ; the actual battle, including life-size replicas of the Allied and German headquarters, the life of soldiers and civilians in the heat of the battle.
Testimonies and comments by various participants in the conflict will contribute to a vivid illustration of the events throughout the exhibition.

Deze aan de Slag om Bastogne gewijde tentoonstelling beslaat een oppervlakte van 1.200m² en is vooral pedagogisch opgevat. Diverse thema’s komen aan bod: plaats van de Slag der Ardennen in het kader van de wereldoorlog; de voornaamste gebeurtenissen vóór december 44, gezien vanuit Bastogne; de eigenlijke veldslag met voorstelling van een Geallieerd en van een Duits HK; het soldatenleven te velde; burgers te midden van de strijd... Langsheen de tentoonstelling wordt commentaar gegeven door getuigen uit die tijd.

In Zusammenarbeit mit der Kulturkommission, unter dem Protektorat der Gemeinde Berdorf br /> anlässlich des « 60e anniversaire de la victoire des forces alliées en Europe et commémoration des anciens combattants et des maquisards luxembourgeois »

Die Foto-Ausstellung wird voraussichtlich folgende Themen umfassen:
Der Überfall der deutschen Wehrmacht auf unsere Gegend, besonders auf die Gemeinde begreifend Berdorf, Kalkesbach, Grundhof, Bollendorf-Brück und Weilerbach
Das Leben in dieser Zeit: Die Unterdrückung und deren Folgen
Die Zwangsrekrutierung und die Resistenz in der Gemeinde
Die Umsiedlung
Die 1. Befreiung durch die Amerikaner am 13. September 1944 – im Niemandsland zwischen den Fronten
Die unausbleibliche Evakuierung der Bevölkerung
Die Ardennen-Offensive
Die 2. Befreiung durch die Amerikaner Ende Dezember 1944 resp. Januar 1945
Die Gegenoffensive der Amerikaner im Februar 1945
Das zu 85 % zerstörte Berdorf

Die Rekonstruktion
Die Eröffnung der Ausstellung (Vernissage) ist auf Samstagnachmittag, den 7. Mai 2005 festgelegt. Die genaue Uhrzeit wird noch festgelegt.

Die Ausstellung bleibt wegen der umfangreichen Thematik voraussichtlich dem Publikum während 4 Wochen zugänglich.

AMICALE DES ANCIENS OFFICIERS DE RÉSERVE LUXEMBOURGEOIS

VIGIL NIGHT 04

A partir de la zone de rassemblement à Junglinster, dans la nuit du 15/16 DEC 04, l'ANORL a organisé, dans le cadre d'une occupation symbolique des positions tenues par le 12 Rgt de la IVe DIV US le 160530 1944, trois Patrouilles du Souvenir qui ont rejoint à pied et pour 0530 hrs, des points marquants d'avant-poste dans le secteur Berdorf / Echternach / Osweiler

A intervalle dans le temps, un deuxième groupe de Garde a rallié les localités ci-dessus en bus pour se joindre aux patrouilles dans leur progression vers les points marquants .

PATROUILLES

A. BIIRKELT – Cie F, 2 Bn, 12 Rgt, IV DIV US

La patrouille BIIRKELT a rallié Berdorf à partir du CR 118 Scheidgen – Lauterbuur en passant par l'ancienne gare de Kalkesbaach, le hameau de Kalkesbaach et l'endroit Heisbich pour se joindre à l'entrée de Berdorf au cortège des autorités et sociétés locales.

Elle s'est rendue à Biirkelt pour la cérémonie de commémoration organisée par les autorités et sociétés locales de Berdorf.

B. TULL – Cie G et Cie E, 2 Bn, 12 Rgt, IV DIV US

La patrouille TULL a rallié Echternach à partir du CR 118 Scheidgen – Lauterbuur en empruntant la piste cyclable jusqu'au Séi et a rejoint ensuite le pied de la rue Tull à l'endroit Buurgmauer, d'où elle est montée vers Tull pour la cérémonie de commémoration.

En même temps, une deuxième patrouille longeait la berge de la Sûre.

A 0600 heures, tous les participants se sont réunis au croisement des rues Maximilien / Duchscher où ils ont allumé des lumignons devant la plaque commémorative à l'endroit Huby.

C. OSWEILER Cie L , 3 Bn, 12 Rgt, IV DIV US

La patrouille OSWEILER est partie de Mëchelshaff, a traversé le bois Haard, est passée à Frombourg et a rallié Osweiler, Place du Village.

Elle s'est jointe aux autorités et sociétés locales pour se rendre à Schlammfur pour la cérémonie commémorative.

Au retour de la garde des avant-postes, les patrouilles et gardes ont été amenées en bus à Osweiler où le petit déjeuner leur a été offert par l'Administration Communale de Rosport.

Une délégation du comité de l'ANORL a assisté à l'accueil de la délégation de hauts dignitaires politiques US dans la soirée du 16.12.2004.

44 anciens officiers de réserve ont pris part aux activités de l'ANORL dans le cadre de Vigil Night. A l'agape de debriefing, le dimanche 19.12.2004 à Osweiler, 29 présences ont été notées
