Please allow me first as a token of respect to say a few words in English, then German and French for our distinguished guest of honor and then in Luxembourg language for my own fellow citizens. It is indeed a great honor for me to welcome to this humble ceremony on behalf of AMBA – the Belgian/Luxbg. Association of the Museums of the Battle of the Ardennes, Her Excellency, Madam Ann Wagner, Ambassador of the United States, as well as Herr Lauber of the German Embassy to conclude this overall day of commemoration marking the 61^st anniversary of the beginning of the "Bulge" in Luxembourg and Belgium
Why this ceremony and why Weiswampach? Weshalb diese Gedenkfeier und weshalb in Weiswampach? Pourquoi cette cérémonie et pourquoi à Weiswampach? I will be brief – ich werde mich kurz fassen – je serai bref :
Last year, exactly on this same day, but much earlier – at 05:30, the community of Weiswampach together with the Luxembourg "Mars et Mercure" Officers’ Association joined in the AMBA-hosted "Night Vigil" effort to silently remember the beginning of that terrible battle and pay tribute to all those who lost their lives. Night Vigil was a unique project in the context of the 60^th anniversary which brought together the 5 nationalities in the true spirit of friendship and reconciliation, that were directly affected by this terrible battle: Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg, the United Kingdom and the united States. Together with returning American and British veterans, Belgian, German and Luxembourg communities jointly remembered! Weiswampach was – for the Grand-Duchy of Luxembourg – the northernmost point ---- from here on Belgian and German border communities took over all the way up to St. Vith, Elsenborn and Monschau. Altogether several thousand people – young and old -- participated in the effort. It was truly a unique commemoration, where on many occasions American, British and German veterans shook hands as a powerful token of reconciliation and message for the future generations.  AMBA, which is a Belgian-Luxembourg association, has recently invited German partners to create a larger transborder regional commemorative community. Future goals will be to ensure that Belgium, German and Luxembourg together will join efforts on this side of the Atlantic to foster the torch of remembrance and promote international and transatlantic friendship by preserving living history and by educational programs.
It was AMBA’s idea, after all those memorable official ceremonies sponsored by the Belgian and Luxembourg Governments to continue beyond the 60^th anniversary together with its Belgian, German and Luxembourg partners as well as its American and British friends. As a token of our strong will do so, AMBA has decided to fix a special "beyond the 60^th anniversary" medallion to the existing U.S. 35^th Inf. Div. Memorial at Weiswampach. From this year on, AMBA with all its friends will – every year – on December 16 hold a silent ceremony at this very memorial and thus create a tradition of remembrance to ensure that 10 years, 20 years and hopefully 50 years from now, people will still remember. Weiswampach has been selected by AMBA as the ideal geographical location for the following reason: This peaceful small Luxembourg community borders with Belgium and Germany and has many mutual transborder programs with its neighboring Belgian and German communities. Weiswampach has a British War Memorial "the Lancaster" memorial, as well as an American Memorial, where we are presently gathered. Weiswampach symbolically thus encompasses the 5 nationalities which are in the focus of today’s ceremony.
As the President of AMBA I would like to thank all of you for attending today and for silently and jointly remembering those who lost their lives or our today’s freedom. Thank you also to Mayor Henri Rinnen and his community council, as well as to Col. Gretsch and the Mars et Mercure Association for supporting our venture. By your distinguished presence today, you ensured that the torch of remembrance will continue to shine. Thank you

Für unsere deutschen Freunde: Zweck und Ziel der AMBA – der Belgisch-Luxemburgischen Vereinigung der Museen über die Ardennenoffensive ist es – zusammen mit deutschen Partnern und geschichtlichen Arbeitskreisen die Erinnerung an eine gemeinsame, schmerzliche Vergangenheit wachzuhalten. Letztes Jahr fanden hier in Weiswampach an der 3-Länderecke Gedenkzeremonien und Mahnwachen bei dem amerikanischen und britischen Gedenksteinen im Rahmen des 60. Erinnerungstages statt. Weiswampach ist in dieser Hinsicht symbolträchtig, da es die 5 Nationalitäten an einem Ort vereint, die damals durch die Ardennenoffensive in Mitleidenschaft gezogen wurden: Belgien, Deutschland, Luxembourg, Großbritannien und die Vereinigten Staaten. Aus diesem Grunde hat sich AMBA entschlossen jedes Jahr am 16. Dezember gegen Ende des Tages allen Opfern des Krieges zu gedenken mit der Aufgabe zusammen mit unseren Partnern und Feunden aus Belgien, Deutschland und Luxembourg, die gemeinsame Erinnerung wach zu halten. Vielen Dank für Ihre Präsenz an dieser schlichten Gedenkzeremonie , vielen Dank für Ihre Unterstützung

Pour nos amis Belges: donc je viens de dire que l’année passée, la communauté de Weiswampach ensemble avec l’Association de Mars et Mercure Luxembourg participait à part égale à l’initiative de AMBA « Night Vigil » dont faisaient partie également plusieurs communes belges et allemandes autour de St. Vith, Elsenborn, Büllingen et Monjoie. Pour Weiswampach, ce fut un grand succès. Le village entier presque était réuni à 05:30 heures pour se souvenir ensemble avec des invités d’honneur et des vétérans des faits tragiques.
Par la suite AMBA, dont le devoir est précisément la sauvegarde de la mémoire collective du passé douloureux commun, a pris la décision de mener bien au delà des cérémonies officielles du 60^e anniversaire cette mémoire et de se réunir chaque année le 16 décembre devant ce mémorial en honneur des forces américaines qui portera à partir d’aujourd’hui également sous forme d’un médaillon AMBA cet engagement.
Weiswampach situé au coin des trois frontières a également un mémorial britannique, le « Lancaster Memorial » qui a été visité et honoré avant cette cérémonie. En tant que Président d’AMBA j’aimerais vous remercier tous, chers amis belges, militaire et civils pour votre présence aujourd’hui et pour votre appui.

On December 21, 2005 the occasion of the special 60th anniversary commemoration of the death of General George S. Patton, jr, held at the Luxembourg American Cemetery in Hamm as well at the General Patton Memorial Museum - Member of AMBA - in Ettelbruck,
Mayor/Member of Parliament Jean-Paul Schaaf, assisted by COL (ret) Guy Lenz and Roland GAUL of  Luxembourg’s national  COC - 60 committee, decorated Mrs. Laura Said, Public Affairs Assistant at the American Embassy, Luxembourg.  For her great merits in assisting COC-60 over the past two years to prepare the 6 national commemorations as well as coordinating and supporting countless regional and local events and working together with Luxembourg and Belgian hosts, associations, museums, Laura Said became a well-known member of the 60^th anniversary commemorative community.   
For her outstanding contribution and personal commitment to the success of the 60^th anniversary commemoration,
Laura Said was awarded the “ Croix de Chevalier de l’Ordre du Mérite du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg ”. 
AMBA, who is proud to have worked together with Laura Said, joins all her friends and acquaintances
in congratulating her for this well-deserved distinction and this honor.

Le 21 décembre 2005 lors de la cérémonie au General Patton Memorial Museum du 60e anniversaire du décès du Général George S. Patton jr Madame Laura aid Public Affairs Assistant à l'Ambassade des Etats Unis à Luxembourg a été décorée de la Croix de Chevalier de l’Ordre du Mérite du Grand-Duché de Luxembourg.
Cette distinction honorifique a été attribuée à Madame Laura Said pour sa contribution exceptionnelle et son engagement personnel au succès des manifestations et commémorations du 60e Anniversaire de la Bataille des Ardennes et de la Libération.
AMBA tient à féliciter Laura Said et surtout la remercier pour son dévouement et son aide sans laquelle certaines activités du 60e n'auraient pu se réaliser.

Distinction honorifique

Lundi 26 septembre 2005, lors d'une cérémonie à l'Ambassade du Grand Duché de Luxembourg, M. Lo Creemers, ancien chargé de mission de l'Attaché Défense à l'Ambassade US de Bruxelles ( DAO ), a été décoré de la Croix de Chevalier de l'Ordre du Mérite de l'Etat Luxembourgeois. Durant 20 années M. Lo Creemers s'est chargé de l'organisation de nombreuses manifestations, citons comme exemple : le Remembrance Day à Ettelbruck, différents concerts donnés par des musiques militaires US, le 50e et 60e Anniversaire de la Bataille des Ardennes et de la Libération et ... AMBA se joint à ses très nombreux amis pour le féliciter et lui transmettre l'expression de sa plus grande sympathie.

AMBA partnership with German „ Huertgenwald“ and „Westwall “ museums and circuits in the making

AMBA, the Belgian-Luxembourg Association of museums of the Battle of the Ardennes, is presently discussing ways of future cooperation with German museums and associations focusing on the battle of “ Huertgen forest “ and the “ Westwall ”, as well as with German associations preserving regional remains of the “ Westwall ” in the “ Eifel ” and “ Rheinland-Pfalz ” border areas.
A recent meeting hosted by Adj-Maj . Jean-Claude Schmetz, curator of the “ Truschbaum museum” www.camp-elsenborn.be at Camp Elsenborn brought together representatives of AMBA museums and delegates of various German museums and “ Westwall ” conservation groups.
The discussions focused on “extending” AMBA to the German border area and link existing thematic museums and historical circuits to the general theme of the “Battle of the Bulge”. In fact, the costly battle at “ Huertgen Forest”, as well as the fighting around the “Siegfried line” and the “ Westwall bunkers” cannot be dissociated from the “Bulge”. From a military history related- and tourism point of view, future circuits could be designed to offer interested audiences an even broader view and scope of the war years 1944-45.
In a practical way, the 10 AMBA museums may in the future “design” combinations as package tours for groups of interested visitors eager to also see remaining “ Westwall fortifications” and get a feeling of the terrain. This could become a real additional value for AMBA.
Future meetings among interested partners will outline various regional and thematic tours in Belgium, Germany and Luxembourg to be condensed in brochures and websites.

Reconciliation over the graves –  50th anniversary of the German cemetery at Sandweiler, Luxembourg, part the 60^th anniversary commemorations 

Numerous VIPs, diplomats, politicians, veterans, general international public and youth groups attended the June 4, 2005 commemorative ceremony at the German military cemetery at Sandweiler www.nat-military-museum.lu/pagesthtml/bulgememorials.html#3 Luxembourg on the occasion of the 50^th anniversary of its official inauguration.
The German cemetery is located less than 2 KMs away from the nearby Luxembourg American cemetery at Hamm . www.abmc.gov
The German War graves commission ( Volksbund Deutscher Kriegsgägerfürsorge ) www.volksbund.de responsible for the ceremony,  had invited a number of German WWII veterans from the “Bulge”, who fought in Luxembourg in winter 1944/45 and who all had comrades buried in the cemetery.

The key speakers of the event were German Ambassador to Luxembourg, H.E. Roland LOHKAMP, German war Graves Commission Chairman, Reinhard FUEHRER, as well as the Luxembourg Prime Minister and present EU Chairman, Jean-Claude JUNCKER.  The latter one gave a high impact address in the true sense of  reconciliation, good neighborhood and friendship between Luxembourg and Germany.
Canon Georges Vuillermoz, himself a forced Luxembourg conscript of the German army in 1943-44, together with a German protestant minister, offered thoughtful remarks and said a prayer before wreaths were presented with the traditional German taps,  “Ich hatt’ einen Kameraden”,  and the German and Luxembourg national anthems being executed by the Luxembourg army band.

AMBA whose key objective is to keep alive and nurture the collective remembrance and memory of the “Battle of the Ardennes” through its museums and activities and foster friendship within the veteran community, offered a wreath presented by Mr. Jean-claude SCHMETZ and Roland GAUL. The AMBA wreath was carried by American, German and Luxembourg boy scouts, symbolizing at its best the passing of the torch of remembrance.

50 Jahre deutscher Soldatenfriedhof Sandweiler / Luxemburg
Internationale Gedenkveranstaltung mit Premierminister Jean-Claude Juncker / Samstag, 4. Juni 2005, 11 Uhr  
Der deutsche Soldatenfriedhof in der luxemburgischen Gemeinde Sandweiler, nur wenige Kilometer vom Flughafen des Großherzogtums entfernt, war die erste Kriegsgräberstätte, die der Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg im Ausland anlegen konnte. Das 50-jährige Bestehen dieses Friedhofes würdigt der Volksbund am 4. Juni mit einer internationalen Gedenkveranstaltung, an der auch Jean-Claude Juncker, Premierminister des Großherzogtums Luxemburg teilnehmen wird.

Volksbund-Präsident Reinhard Führer wird die Gäste begrüßen, zu denen auch der Präsident des Verfassungsgerichts, Marc Thill, der deutsche Botschafter Roland Lohkamp sowie diplomatische Vertreter mehrerer Staaten zählen. Die Gedenkansprache hält Abbé Georges Vuillermoz, Domkapitular und Priester am großherzoglichen Hof, der als Zwangsrekrutierter in der Wehrmacht diente.

Bei der Einweihung im Juni 1955 waren über 2 000 Angehörige mit Sonderzügen aus Deutschland angereist, und auch jetzt rechnet der Volksbund mit mehreren hundert Angehörigen und ehemaligen Kriegsteilnehmern. Wie vor 50 Jahren werden auch viele Luxemburger zu der Veranstaltung erwartet.

Insgesamt ruhen etwa 10 900 Soldaten auf dem Friedhof. Zunächst bestattete der Gräberdienst der US-Armee 1945 etwa 5 600 deutsche Gefallene in Sandweiler, die während der erbitterten Kämpfe im Winter 1944/45 den Tod gefunden hatten. Nach Übergabe der Anlage an den Volksbund betteten dessen Mitarbeiter nochmals über 5 000 Gefallene aus 150 kleineren Grablagen in Luxemburg nach Sandweiler um. Einige Einzelschicksale sind in der dreisprachigen Broschüre beschrieben, die der Volksbund aus Anlass des 50-jährigen Bestehens herausgegeben hat.

Vor der Gedenkveranstaltung in Sandweiler finden Kranzniederlegungen am Ehrenmal in der Gemeinde (9.30 Uhr) und auf dem amerikanischen Soldatenfriedhof Hamm (10 Uhr) statt, zu denen die Presse herzlich eingeladen ist.

Doubtlessly, the highlight of the entire ceremony consisted of the planting of a peace tree by three veterans of the “Bulge”; Mr. Erhard MITZINNEK, who fought it the 9^th German Volksgrenadierdivision in northern Luxembourg, COL (ret) USAFE, John Parker,, who as a B-17 pilot of 457^th Bomb Group, flew missions over the Ardennes, and Lt.Col (ret.) Aloyse SCHILTZ, a distinguished Luxembourg allied veteran, who, as a special liaison officer fought with American forces in 1944/45.  The three veterans unquestionably set a very powerful signal by this joint unique gesture of RECONCILATION in honor of ALL those who fell on this very special occasion of the 60^th anniversary of the end of WWII.

Discours du Lt - Colonel BEM Daniel Georis lors de la cérémonie au Mardasson.

Monseigneur, Madame,
Monsieur le Gouverneur, Madame l’Ambassadeur, Madame la Présidente du Conseil Provincial,
Messieurs les Généraux et Chefs d’Etat-major,
Mesdames et Messieurs en vos titres et qualités,
je vous souhaite la bienvenue et vous remercie de rehausser de votre présence cette cérémonie.

Nous sommes réunis aujourd’hui parce que c’est une très belle journée parce que de nombreux Anciens du Regt sont parmi nous et manifestent ainsi leur reconnaissance à d’autres plus Anciens encore ( ceux du FIRST FIELD belges et luxembourgeois ) qui dans les années 40 se sont battus pour défendre nos libertés et nous rappellent l’essence même de notre mission.
Cette année (à quelques mois près) constituent le 175éme anniversaire de la BELGIQUE, le 170ème anniversaire de notre Regt, le 60ème anniversaire de sa reconstitution à partir du First Field et le 40ème anniversaire de présence dans notre ville de garnison. Il y avait donc plus d’une raison de célébrer cet événement.
Dès 1941 se constituait en GB une Bie d’Arty à DEUX troupes (de DEUX sections, armées chacune de DEUX pièces d’artillerie (avec au total HUIT pièces), elle était dénommée la « First Belgian Field Battery ».
En Nov 42, le Major DE RIDDER prend le commandement de cette Bie en stage à l’époque au sein de la 49ème Div Inf GB. La Bie est intégrée dans la Bde PIRON en janvier 43. En 44, la Bie est renforcée par une troisième troupe composée de Luxembourgeois. L’attitude exemplaire de la First Field By au sein de la Bde PIRON lui vaudra la Fouragère aux couleurs de la Croix de guerre 1940 et l’autorisation d’inscrire sur ses boucliers les citations NORMANDIE et Canal de WESSEM. En 45, renforcée des volontaires de guerre et toujours sous les ordres du LtCol DE RIDDER elle devient le 1er Regt d’Aie CLERKEN.
Le nouveau 1 RA reprend les traditions du 1 Regt Aie créé en 1836 ; la 1ère Bie (P) prend le nom de Bie libération afin de conserver le souvenir de la First Belgian Field Bty. Actuellement la Bie A a repris les traditions de la Bie libération.
J’aurais voulu éviter de citer l’un ou l’autre nom des Anciens du First Field mais je me permets, à travers un Ancien, de vous mettre tous (belges et luxembourgeois) aujourd’hui à l’honneur lors de cette cérémonie, cet Ancien que j’ai eu l’honneur de côtoyer à RONGY en Sep dernier est le Colonel e.r. Maurice SIMONET, commandant de la Troop B de la First Belgian Field Battery, puis premier commandant de la Batterie Libération du 1A.
Vous les Anciens du First Field de nationalité luxembourgeoise vous avez pris beaucoup de risques, car vous étiez considérés comme déserteurs par les Allemands qui avaient annexé votre pays. Le lieutenant-colonel DE RIDDER, chef de corps du 1A en 1945, a souligné, au moment des adieux, la qualité de votre travail, je le cite:
Jamais la Brigade belge n’a fait appel en vain aux feux de son Artillerie, dont vous, les Luxembourgeois, représentiez le tiers.  Nos vaillants fantassins avaient confiance en vous.  La preuve en a été donnée maintes fois...
J’exprime également toute ma gratitude au Prince Félix de Luxembourg qui a grandement facilité ma tâche par sa sollicitude infaillible envers vous tous et envers moi...
Monseigneur, je vous demande d’être notre interprète auprès du Grand-Duc Jean pour le remercier ; en effet votre père était officier à la 32e Guards Brigade de la Guards Armored Division qui libéra BRUXELLES.  Aux ordres de cette division se trouvait la Brigade PIRON et donc la First Belgian Field. Le Prince Jean et ses compatriotes furent donc parmi les libérateurs de notre capitale.
De l’histoire de notre Regt depuis 1940, je retiendrai quelques noms d’artilleurs qui se sont fait connaître dans d’autres domaines, durant la campagne des 18 jours, un SOff de réserve s’est particulièrement illustré par sa détermination, il était chef de pièce d’artillerie, et se nommait THEO LEFEVRE, futur Premier Ministre de BELGIQUE.
A mentionner également, le nom du Docteur de la 1^st BE Field Arty By qui participa à la libération de 44, il s’agissait du docteur GOL, père de feu Jean GOL, ancien vice Premier Ministre et enfin je ne peux oublier qu’en 1982, le 1A compta parmi ses SOff milicien un certain Philippe COLLARD, actuel Député Bourgmestre de Bastogne à qui nous souhaitons le même avenir professionnel que Théo LEFEVRE…..

Je voudrais terminer ce discours en remerciant les membres de la Fraternelle Royale du 1A qui œuvre de manière très active afin que l’histoire du 1A ne soit pas oubliée.

L’oubli est une insulte au passé, une menace pour l’avenir.

Luxembourg and Belgian WWII veterans honored in Bastogne.

 

On April 22, 2005, the Belgian army’s 1^st Field artillery regiment ,1A, (based in Bastogne since 1964) commemorated its own 60^th anniversary  -- its reconstitution from the “First Belgian Field Battery,” created in the UK in 1941.  This artillery unit, initially composed of three “troops” (batteries) of four each 25 pounder guns, was integrated into the famous Belgian “Brigade Piron” force that participated in 1944-45 in the campaigns of Normandy, Belgium and the Netherlands.  The traditions of the unit actually go back to 1836 !
Whereas two “firing” batteries (A and B) of the unit were staffed by Belgian soldiers, troop “C” consisted of Luxembourgers, who had escaped the grip of forced conscription into the German army and had reached the UK to volunteer as allied soldiers.  After their integration into the “Brigade Piron” and training as artillerymen, their own unit was soon to become known as the “Luxembourg battery”.  A smaller number of other Luxembourgers also became members of the “scout” section of the same “Brigade Piron”.
After landing in Normandy on August 6, 1944, the “Brigade Piron” distinguished itself during the battle of the “Orne Canal” bridgehead, took part in the liberation of Brussels in early September 1944, participated as a support unit in “Market Garden” and later on fought in the Belgian and Dutch “Limbourg” low countries, especially around the “Wessem Canal”.  After a brief period of occupation in post WWII Germany, the Luxembourgers were demobilized after the entire “artillery” component of the “Brigade Piron” had been reorganized and reactivated under its pre-WWII denomination of 1A ( First Field artillery regiment ).
On this memorable occasion of the unit’s own 60^th anniversary, the “1A” especially honoured Belgian and Luxembourg veterans, who as special guests participated in an elaborate parade and demonstration at the famous “Mardasson Memorial” in Bastogne.  The event had been jointly organized by the “1A”, commanded by Lt.Col. Daniel Georis (*) and the city of Bastogne.  As a special highlight, Their Royal Highnesses, Grand Duke Henri and Grand-Duchess Maria-Teresa of Luxembourg, participated in this outstanding ceremony and day of mutual remembrance.
Whereas Belgian and Luxembourg army troops rendered ceremonial military honours, the Diekirch museum provided an original 25 pounder gun (**), limber and an operational Morris “Quad” gun tractor, as part of a “re-enactment”.  Museum staffer, Adj.Maj. Roland Rach himself and 5 Belgian NCO colleagues of “1A”, dressed 1944-style British fashion, gave a unique historical display under the applause of the enthusiastic attendance.
Even more, on April 23, 2005, on the occasion of the “open day” of the “1A” barracks in Bastogne, the “battery” had set up a field emplacement and the “gunners” responded to questions by numerous interested visitors and demonstrated three mock firing ”missions”.
Needless to say that the Belgian and Luxembourg veterans were not only honoured, but also deeply touched by this outstanding event, which was truly theirs….!

 

(*):    As a Bastogne-based unit, “1A”, commanded by Lt.Col Georis had supported numerous AMBA – and other  60^th anniversary events in the area on the occasion of ceremonies for returning American and allied veterans and their families.  Special thanks to him and the “1A” staff

(**):   The original WWII 25 Pounder gun had been donated to the museum by the British army thru HRH, former Grand Duke Jean (who fought with the “Irish guards in WWII) in 1993. The ammunition limber and Morris gun tractor were donated by a Luxembourg veteran of the former “Brigade Piron.”  Due to lack of space, a fitting display could not be implemented so far at the museum.  It is intended to create a special exhibit with this equipment honouring the Luxembourg allied veterans in a separate adjacent hall at the museum in the near future.
